Stan Wawrinka vs. Mikael Ymer head to head
They have never met before.
Vawrinka upsets Medvedev
Stan Wawrinka stunned top seed Daniil Medvedev in the second round of the Moselle Open to reach his first quarterfinal since finishing in the last eight in Melbourne 2021.
Wawrinka, who had won just three games this season prior to the start of this tournament, has now won four games in a row. The Swiss edged out Laslo Djere and Zsombor Piros in qualifying, then defeated Joao Sousa in straight sets in the opening round.
The 37-year-old nearly won a second consecutive main draw match in straight sets on Thursday, but he wasted a match point in the second set tiebreak. Medvedev eventually grabbed the tie break and forced the deciding set but didn’t start well as Wawrinka extended a 3-0 lead thanks to an early break.
The former No. 1 hit back by winning the next three games, but Wawrinka grabbed a second break in game eight and then finished the match with a sensational 6-4, 6-7 (-79), 6-3 win.
This was Wawrinka’s first top-10 win since defeating Andrey Rublev at the Paris Masters in 2020. If he wins on Friday, he will play his first semi-final since finishing in the bottom four in Doha two years ago.

Ymer blows past Barrère
Opposite Wawrinka is world No. 100 Mikael Ymer, who handed a straight sets drubbing to France’s Grégoire Barrère in the second round on Thursday.
The 24-year-old Swede didn’t have a single break point in the match while converting 3-of-11 in an hour and 21 minutes for a 6-4, 6-3 win. Ymer got 80% of his first serves right and won 77% of those points to advance to the fourth quarterfinals of the season.
He had lost in the last eight in Adelaide but was a semi-finalist in Montpellier and Washington.
Ymer has not dropped a set in the tournament so far, beating another Frenchman and eighth-seeded Adrian Mannarino 7-5, 6-0 in the opening round.
He’s 21-20 this season and will try to keep the momentum going into the round of 16.
Wawrinka v Ymer prediction and tip
In his current form, Wawrinka will be difficult to stop in the quarterfinals. Ymer can take a set but the Swiss should come through.
