No. 13 Utah Football (2-1) will open this weekend’s Pac-12 game on the road against Arizona State. The two teams have met 32 times and Utah is 10-22 in those games. That includes a record of 4-15 on the road.

Utah has also won four of their last six games against the Sun Devils, including their most recent away win. This was a 49-26 win in which Troy Williams threw for 296 yards and 4 touchdowns.

Aside from the heartbreaking game in Florida, Utah has been a powerhouse this year. The team ranks second in pass defense in FBS, allowing just 90 yards per game. They also lead the Pac-12 on rushing offense at 216.7 yards per game.

Although the team has outscored opponents this season by 134-43 points, they only managed 14 points in the first quarter. While this isn’t a cause for panic, the Utes are hoping they can resolve the issue before it costs them a game.

“It would be ideal to start off better,” head coach Kyle Whittingham told the Salt Lake Tribune. “We’re going to be making a few adjustments in training this week to get a little more jump start early and see if we can rectify it.”

Arizona State is 1-2 this season, with losses from Oklahoma State and Eastern Michigan. Their only win came against Northern Arizona. They seem to have their own offensive struggles, with quarterback Emory Jones going 20-32 for 182 yards last week.

While those stats aren’t necessarily bad for Arizona State, Utah’s strong defense should be a whole new beast. The Utah defense has recovered two fumbles and recorded three interceptions this season, including one that was returned for a touchdown.

Utah’s offense is also looking strong coming into this game, converting 55% of third-downs and 18 total touchdowns. The Utes have been on fire lately and will want to keep the ball rolling as they play into the conference this weekend.

But the Pac-12 will host some of the toughest games of the year in Utah, including encounters with No. 15 Oregon and No. 7 USC. The Pac-12 is struggling in the college football playoffs, but the Conference has a real shot at making it with four teams placed in the top 20.

Utah will once again be the shining star of the conference as they play both Oregon and USC later in the season. But the team is focused on making it every day, and that starts with beating Arizona State.

While this game won’t be too difficult for Utah, it’s certainly one they can’t just sugarcoat. Utah has been fortunate to have a fairly easy schedule going into the season and this game will be another opportunity to hone its skills.

Utah is a 15-point favorite over the Sun Devils. The game takes place on Saturday, September 24 at 8:30 p.m. MDT.
