Stefanos Tsitsipas vs. Jordan Thompson head to head

Their only previous encounter came at the 2019 Washington Open, where Tsitsipas won in straight sets and finished in the last eight.

Tsitsipas needs four sets against little-known qualifiers

Alexander Ritschard had a 25/2 chance to win his opening encounter against Tsitsipas and yet the Greek number one found it difficult against his opponent.

In the end, Tsitsipas, who was celebrating a title win in Mallorca, recorded his fifth consecutive victory as he defeated Ritschard in a hard-fought four-seater to reach the second round here for the first time since 2018.

Tsitsipas won 7-6(1) 6-3 5-7 6-4 in a match spanning three and a half hours, despite losing serve four times during the encounter. He had to bounce back from a 4-1 deficit in the opening set, catch it in a tiebreaker and then loosen to a two-set lead as he broke his opponent twice.

And despite failing to break Ritschard for most of the third set, it looked like he was in control of the game as he dropped serve in the 11th game. Ritschard served it out to take it to fourth place where he broke Tsitsipas in the very first game.

The Greek player retaliated with a break of his own, then repeated the dose in game 10 when Ritschard served to stay in the game.

Tsitsipas will hope to raise his level in the later stages but for now he would be relieved that he broke his first round hoodoo.

Thompson tears past Roberto

Roberto Carballes Baena didn’t stand much of a chance in his opener against Jordan Thompson, but little could be seen of the carnage to come.

The Australian overtook his opponent in one of the more uncomplicated opening round matches of the men’s competition, winning 6-4, 6-1, 6-1 in just an hour and 47 minutes.

Thompson, who had won a few Challenger events on grass in the build-up to Wimbledon, shared a break of serve with Carballes Baena in the first five games of the game but it was one-way traffic from there.

The Aussie broke his opponent for a second time when Carballes served Baena to stay in the set and then went on to break him five more times in the match to wrap up the encounter.

And while bookies don’t give Thompson much hope – he’s 41/10 to win this – he could actually have a chance to put Tsitsipas in trouble.

Tsitsipas v Thompson prediction and tip

Tsitsipas is a better player overall, sure, and has won a title, but his overall form makes him a little suspect. Especially against a player who can hold his own on grass. We support the Greek to win but not before Thompson has won a set against him.

Tip: Tsitsipas wins AND both players win a set: 18/11 (Click here to bet with bet365)
