Chun-Hsin Tseng advanced to the second round in Seoul after Australia’s Christopher O’Connell withdrew from the first round.

After both players traded two breaks each early in the first set, Tseng broke again to win the first set 6-4. Quarterfinalist from San Diego O’Connell retired immediately after the opening set, sending the Taipei player into the nest round.

Tseng, who has mostly played in lower level tournaments, improved to 5-6 at tour level.

The 21-year-old has competed in three Challenger finals this year, winning in Bengaluru and Murcia and finishing second in Roseto degli Abruzzi, Italy.

The 2018 French Open and Wimbledon boys’ champion is aiming to win on Thursday and reach a first quarter-final on the tour.

Kovacevic wins on tour debut

He made it into the main draw as a lucky loser. But 24-year-old Aleksandar Kovacevic capitalized on the opportunity by defeating seventh-seeded Miomir Kecmanovic in the opening round.

Kovacevic played his first-ever match on the tour, creating the lone break of the first set and then returning from a break in the second to beat world No. 1. 32 6-4, 6-4 in an hour and 33 minutes.

Kovacevic hit 14 aces in the match, winning 84% of points on first serve and saving 9 out of 10 break points he faced. He converted 3 of 7 break points in the match and hit 39 winners, 21 more than his opponent.

Indianapolis Challenger runner-up Kovacevic had beaten Japan’s Sho Shimabukuro in the first round of qualifying but lost the second qualifying match to Nicol├ís Jarry.

Tseng’s consistency allowed him to break into the top 100 this year, but he’s had more success on clay than hard courts. He remains the favorite in the round of 16 and should end the lucky loser run.
