Jil Teichmann has been at his best on clay this season and the Swiss continued to impress on Friday as she edged out 15th seeded Victoria Azarenka in a three-pointer to reach her first round of 16 at Roland Garros.
The left-hander, who was a semifinalist in Madrid and a quarterfinalist in Rome, lost the first set to Azarenka but recovered in the next two sets, beating the Belarusian 4-6 7-5 7-6 (10-5) in three hours and 18 minutes.
The win was Teichmann’s 11th win of 14 games on clay that year. She had never progressed past the second round at a Major before, losing in the opening round in her only previous appearance at Roland Garros in 2020.
Teichmann had started the tournament with two easy wins, passing Bernarda Pera and Olga Danilović in straight sets. After beating Azarenka on Friday, she is now aiming to reach her third consecutive quarterfinal this season.
Stephens Stalls Parry’s Run
2018 finalist Sloane Stephens is through to the fourth round of the French Open for the eighth time in her career.
After posting back-to-back comeback wins in the first two rounds, Stephens recorded a straight set win over France’s Diane Parry in the third round on Friday.
World No. 64 Stephens, who was broken twice in the match, converted 6 of 14 break points to go 6-2, 6-3 and halt Parry’s strong run in the tournament, which saw defending champion Barbora Krejcikova beat defending champion Barbora Krejcikova in the first round repressed.
Stephens started her campaign by passing Jule Niemeier 5-7 6-4 6-2. She scored a similar win in the next round, defeating Sorana Cîrstea 3-6 6-2 6-0.
The 2017 US Open champion was beaten by Krejcikova in the fourth round last year. She will aim to reach her third Roland Garros quarter-finals on Sunday.
Teichmann v Stephens prediction and tip
Stephens had lost all four of her clay-court games ahead of the French Open this year but she appears to have found her footing in Paris. However, she meets a player with great touch on Sunday. Teichmann will be a tough player to beat for the former finalist. Expect the Swiss to win in three.
