A 26-year-old man was arrested from Tamil Nadu for allegedly defrauding people under the pretense of investing their money in cryptocurrency, police said on Wednesday. The accused has been identified as Dinesh Kumar from Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu. A complainant said he received a call from an international number in April last year. The caller introduced him to the forex trading market and cryptocurrency investments and convinced him to deposit around 20 rupees into various bank accounts, a senior police official said.
Once he deposited said amount, the caller stopped receiving calls. At that point, the complainant realized he had been duped by promising an investment in the US Treasury Department (USDT), the official said. During an investigation, the trail by which the fraudulent money was transferred to the various bank accounts was analyzed and the suspect’s whereabouts in Coimbatore were traced, Deputy Police Commissioner (South) Chandan Chowdhary said. Kumar was arrested after a raid in Tamil Nadu district. The accused stated that he had transferred the fraudulent amount to a newly opened checking account. He later transferred the sum to other bank accounts, police said. Kumar, who used to work in a shop, started duping people after learning digital banking. He had also taken some digital marketing courses, police added.
