As far as bizarre tennis inconsistencies go, you can’t get past Stephens to lead this pack. She had entered this year’s French Open after a five-game losing streak that included four losses on clay.
And now, suddenly, she’s won two out of two, despite both starting as the second favourite. And lost the first set in both rounds.
First, she defeated Jules Niemeier 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 before defeating Sorana Cirstea in the second round. She was on the court for an hour and 56 minutes before claiming a 3-6, 6-2, 6-0 win in another odd turn.
Cirstea created the crucial break in game eight of the first set before taking a 2-0 lead in game two.
And that was it. Stephens ran away for the next 12 games, breaking her opponent six times to seal the three-pointer.
Stephens now meets a surprise opponent, ranked 97th in the world, and for the first time in the tournament the American is a favourite.
Parry continues to impress
Parry rose to fame late last year when she reached the finals of two WTA 125 competitions, losing one in Buenos Aires and winning the second in Montevideo.
However, she hasn’t continued to do so with too many results this season. In fact, Parry failed to win a single main draw match in the first eight WTA competitions this year.
It was only in Saint-Malo, another WTA 125 competition, that Parry managed to win a match, followed by another win in the first round of WTA Paris. Returning to Strasbourg, Parry lost again in the opener, leaving her as a whopping second favorite for their opener against Barbora Krejcikova.
That she defeated Krejcikova after suffering defeat and then defeated Maria Osorio Serrano in the second straight set speaks volumes about her turnaround.
