Jannik Sinner vs. Mackenzie McDonald head to head

Italian player Jannik Sinner prevailed in the second round match against Roberto Carballes Baena with a narrow 4-setter. Sinner won 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3. Baena controlled rallies in the first set and half of the match, but Sinner was able to grow into the match, hitting more winners than unforced errors.
Sinner also defeated American qualifier Bjorn Fratangelo in straight sets in the first round match. Sinner’s best result at Roland Garros was reaching the quarter-finals in 2020, which was his French Open debut, and he reached the round of 16 last year.
20-year-old Jannik Sinner is 10-3 on clay and 26-6 overall this year. He has reached 5 quarterfinals at major tournaments this year including the Australian Open.
Earlier this year he shocked the tennis world by replacing his coach since he was 13, Riccardo Piatti, with Simone Vagnozzi.
Sinner has played good tennis but he has more gears in him and we are yet to see the best of him. The best players progressively play their best tennis over the two weeks of a Grand Slam, and it’s safe to assume that Sinner’s level will rise with every match played here.
McDonald reaches Round 3 for the first time
World No. 60 Mackenzie McDonald reached the third round of Roland Garros for the first time in his career after beating Nikoloz Basilashvili 6-3 6-1 6-4 in the second round.
McDonald is primarily a hard court player. He’s 4-5 on clay this year and 13-14 overall. Since reaching the finals in Washington last year when he lost to Sinner, McDonald hasn’t made any type of run at any tournament since then.
The American has a very aggressive baseline game and never lets his opponents rest with their serves. He’s also an excellent serve returner, but his own serve is very weak and often breaks.
He’ll have a free hit against Sinner, knowing he’s the underdog here.

Sinner is the clear favorite here as both players prefer to control the game through baseline rallies and Sinner is slightly superior to McDonald in this department. Of the two, Sinner’s serve also withstands pressure.
