Jannik Sinner faced qualifier Bjorn Fratangelo and the American didn’t lose a game 6-3 6-2 6-3. Sinner played a very calm match which was important for him.
He’s a very so-so player and he needs to start well so he can continue to build on that. Lots of good stuff in this one. He won over 80% on his first serve, he served pretty well, and he hit 32 winners and only 26 unforced errors, saving both break points he faced.
If he does that again he should be good but it’s going to be tough. The Spaniard is very annoying, he gets a lot of balls back and Sinner has to avoid rollovers during rallies. Mistakes will pile up and doubts will creep in. He just needs to keep playing his game and a good serve would help him do that.
He can knock Baena off the court and score points quickly. The longer rallies will be difficult for him to handle.
A quick 5-setter for Baena
It took Roberto Carballes Baena 5 sets to defeat Oscar Otte 7-6(5) 6-1 3-6 2-6 6-3. It was a very fast match, mainly because Otte doesn’t feel like playing long rallies.
This works for Baena, who likes to lure players into doing just that. I retrieve the ball and you either hit a winner or smash it wide. It worked well early on as Baena won a tie break and then sent Otte into a quick meltdown. As the German started hitting more, the Spaniard got into trouble.
Eventually he was able to weather the storm and win 3rd place. It was played well by both. Otte hit 88 winners in the match and still lost, but only because Baena hit 55 to just 22 penalties. I doubt he can repeat such a feat no matter how well he plays again.

So this will be on Sinners Racket. He can and should win the match, but he has to be smart. Otte provided him with a solid blueprint: Attack smart. Sinner needs to beat his opponent to win, but he needs to keep his mistakes to a minimum. Otte did the same, but he committed nearly the same number of errors as Baena had winners.
That can’t happen again and if he does I don’t think Sinner will have a good time. I think the Spaniard will get a set but that will be all.
