Aliaksandra Sasnovich ended the run of three-time Grand Slam winner Angelique Kerber at the French Open with a set win in the third round on Friday.
The Belarusian, number 47 in the world rankings, needed an hour and 29 minutes to defeat the number 21 seed German 6-4, 7-6 (7-5).
Sasnovich hit 44 winners against Kerbers 14. She converted half of the 10 break points she held and saved half of the eight she faced against the left-hander.
The Belarusian, who had never progressed past the second round in the last six attempts at the French Open, will make a second fourth-round appearance at a Grand Slam on Sunday.
She had started the tournament by defeating China’s Wang Xinyu in straight sets, and then achieved a comeback win over US Open champion Emma Raducanu in the second round.
Trevisan passes Saville
It’s going to be a great month for Italy’s Martina Trevisan.
The Italian left-hander, who won her maiden WTA title ahead of the French Open in Rabat, has continued her winning streak at the Paris Major.
Trevisan reached the fourth round at Roland Garros without dropping a set in the first three rounds. She started with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Harriet Dart and knocked out Magda Linette 6-3, 6-2 in the second round.
In the third round on Friday, Trevisan ousted Australia’s Daria Saville 6-3, 6-4 in an hour and 27 minutes.
Trevisan converted all four break points she held, saving 8 out of 10 to move into the last 16 for the second time at Roland Garros. She was a quarterfinalist on her debut in 2020.
