World No. 7 Aryna Sabalenka marched into her third round for the third time at Roland Garros. The Belarusian, who has yet to make it past the round of 16 on the clay-court major, defeated American Madison Brengle in straight sets on Thursday.
Sabalenka dominated the action from the start and won the first set by breaking her opponent twice. She also broke Brengle three times a second to end the match in just 64 minutes.
Sabalenka, who lost to Iga Swiatek in Rome, was also a finalist in Stuttgart in a clay court season that has been very good for her so far.
She had started her challenge at Roland Garros with a win over France’s Chloé Paquet.
Giorgi KOs Putintseva
Just like Sabalenka, Camila Giorgi had to pull herself together to win her opening match against Zhang Shuai of China. But it only took her two sentences to finish off a tough second-round opponent in Yulia Putintseva.
Both Giorgi and Putintseva had 6 break points in the match, with the Italian converting four and saving four on her way to a 6-3, 7-5 win over the Kazakh.
The 30-year-old world No. 30 was 3-0 on clay before the start of the tournament in 2022, but two wins in the first two rounds would have fueled her even more.
Giorgi, who won the Canadian Open title last year, is in the third round at Roland Garros for the second time. 2018 was the only year she went past the first two rounds at the French Open.
Giorgi had beaten Zhang 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 in the opening round.
