Elena Rybakina against Ajla Tomljanovic head to head
Rybakina leads 1-0; Most recently, she beat the Australian at the Madrid Open 2021.
Rybakina KOs Martic
Elena Rybakina reached her second Grand Slam quarterfinal after beating Petra Martic 7:5, 6:3 in the preliminary round.
This marks a notable turnaround in their form considering it has been a one-sided season for Kazakh No. 1, world No. 23 Rybakina.
Since reaching the Adelaide International final, her form has taken a slight dip due to health concerns. She failed to deliver in the early tournaments, and it wasn’t until American swing that we saw any semblance of rhythm in Rybakina’s game.
It was still unpredictable as the quarterfinal run at Indian Wells was followed by a litany of early eliminations in Miami, Charleston and Stuttgart. At the big clay court events in Madrid, Rome and Paris, Elena made it to the third round.
It was the same story on turf, losing early on at Den Bosch and Eastbourne.
At Wimbledon, where anything can happen, the number 17 has done well to reverse her recent rut. The 23-year-old notched a handful of impressive victories over Coco Vandeweghe, resurgent Canada’s Bianca Andreescu and Qinwen Zheng – all in straight sets.
As a former No. 12 (who only reached that rank in January this season), Rybakina will appreciate her chances of progressing.
Tomljanovic with Yet Another QF in London
Ajla Tomljanovic has reached the quarterfinals at Wimbledon for the second time in a row. Last year she couldn’t get any further and this time there’s a good chance it could be the case again.
Her current campaign saw her post wins over Jil Teichmann, Catherine Harrison and No. 13 Barbora Krejcikova. Ajla was in form as she played the powerful Czech, a former world number two, beating her 2-6 6-4 6-3. After that, she found herself in another similar threesome – this one with Alize Cornet.
Tomljanovic prevailed with a very similar result of 4-6 6-4 6-3.
Tomljanovic, now at No. 44, has had an erratic year with just a handful of deep runs. Most recently she was in Nottingham and before that in Rabat and Istanbul (all quarterfinals).
She is 19-16 as of this week.
Rybakina v Tomljanovic prediction and tip
This match can swing either way, but Rybakina has a much higher chance of winning. She has had a career far superior to her opponent (eight WTA Career Finals) and also boasts an incredible pedigree and record against the top 10 players.
Elena has been waiting for a moment like this for a long time and she will make the best of it.
