Rune KOs Shapovalov

It’s been an impressive season so far for Holger Rune and the world no. 40 made it even better by seeding Denis Shapovalov at the top of the 14th seed in the first round of his main draw debut at Roland Garros.

The 19-year-old, who hadn’t won a Grand Slam match in his past two major appearances, finally booked his first on Tuesday. Rune hit 10 fewer winners than Shapovalov’s 27, but also made 34 fewer unforced errors than the Canadian’s 53.

In the two-hour bout, Rune was only broken once in the match while converting five out of nine. Break points to win 6-3, 6-1, 7-6 (7-4).

With the win, the Dane improved his season record to 13-10. He’s 11-6 on clay this year. Rune recently won his first ATP title in Munich, defeating Alexander Zverev in the second round of that tournament. He also reached the semi-finalists in Lyon last week, bringing good form to Paris.

Having booked his first win at the Paris Major, he will now be hungry for more success.

Laaksonen shrugs off the slow start to advance

Henri Laaksonen reached the second round of the French Open for the third time in his fourth appearance in the main draw.

The Swiss, who hadn’t won a match since winning the first round in Miami, ended his six-match losing streak (across all levels) with a 2:6, 6:4, 6:4, 7:6 (7:1). Victory over the Spaniard Pedro Martinez.

Ranked No. Laaksonen, ranked 96th in the world, hit 66 winners and had 58 unforced errors in the match versus Martinez’s 31 winners and 36 unforced errors. Both players converted five break points each in the match but it was the Swiss who won the crucial moments to knock out the world No. 43.

Laaksonen, 30, faces a tough second round battle on Thursday. It will be interesting to see if he can deliver again.
