Pima Baseball extends winning streak to eight games with victory over Glendale

The Pima baseball team clinched their eighth straight win Tuesday with a win over Glendale Community College .

The Aztecs (26-8, 13-5 in ACCAC) have won 12 of their last 13 games as they conceded 25 runs against Glendale (21-13, 8-10).

They had 24 runs in their doubleheader sweep over Langley Blaze on Monday.

second grader Andrew Stuck (Canyon del Oro grad) ended Day 3 for 7 with four RBIs and four runs.

second grader Gage Mestas also went 3 for 7 with three RBIs and three runs. second grader Hunter Faildo went 3 for 6 with four RBIs and two runs. student in the first year Benji Cazares (Tucson High) was 3 for 7 with four RBIs and three runs. second grader Jaeden Swanberg (Salpointe Catholic) and Matt Cornelius got the wins on the hill.

Game 1 – Pima 12, Glendale 3:

The Aztecs opened the game with seven runs in the fourth inning and another three runs in the sixth to win the first game.

When the score was 2:2, it was the fourth newcomer Antonio Avila made sure it didn’t stay that way as he hit a home run to give Pima the lead. Stucky and Faildo hit back-to-back RBI singles and Cazares hit a three-run homer to make it 8-2. Avila, who started the barrage, ended the inning with an RBI single as the Aztecs led 9-2.

second grader Joey Adge made his presence felt in the sixth inning when he hit a triple home run and scored for Cazares and a freshman Alessandro Castro (Pusch Ridge Christian).

Cazares finished the game 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs, while Adge went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and one run. Avila was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and two carries and Mestas hit an RBI single with two carries in the second inning as he ended the game with two RBIs and one run scored at 2 for 4. Faildo finished 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run. Stucky was 1 for 4 with an RBI and a run.

Swanberg clinched the win (4-2) after pitching six innings and giving up three runs (two earned) on eight hits with four strikeouts and two walks on 92 pitches.

Game 2 – Pima 13, Glendale 2 (7 innings): The Aztecs clinched the run rule victory when they scored the first 12 runs of the game.

Faildo went on the court with a three-run homer in the first inning. In the second inning with an out, Stucky hit his own three-point bomb to make it 7-0. student in the first year David Shackelford added a two-run RBI double and scored in the next game as a sophomore Rocco Gump landed him on an RBI single. The Aztecs led 11-0 into the third inning.

Gump hit a victim fly RBI in the fourth inning to score a freshman Bran Kragel.

Stucky finished the game 2-3 with three RBIs and three runs scored, while Faildo went 1-3 with three RBIs and one run scored. Shackelford finished 1 for 2 with two RBIs and two runs. Gump was 1 for 2 with two RBIs and a run. Mestas finished the game 1-3 with an RBI and two runs, and Cazares hit an RBI single in the fifth as he finished 1-3 with an RBI and one run.

Cornelius improved to 7-1 on the mound after pitching five innings and giving up two runs (two earned) on six hits with six strikeouts and a walk on 76 pitches.

The Aztecs play their next ACCAC doubleheader at GateWay in Phoenix on Friday. The first game starts at 12 noon.
