Jessica Pegula vs. Anhelina Kalinina head to head

The two players share a fierce rivalry which currently sits at 2-2. Pegula have prevailed in their last three encounters, although two of those wins have been free kicks.

Pegula KOs Wang

Jessica Pegula started her journey with a resounding 6-2, 6-4 win over Qiang Wang.

The win follows her recent success on clay courts, most notably at the Madrid Open where she reached the final before losing to Ons Jabeur in three sets. That was Pegula’s first 1000 title and the third major tournament that she had run deep.

The 28-year-old became world No. 11 after her quarter-final stint at the Australian Open and a semi-final appearance in Miami. Additionally, a significant chunk of their losses this season have come from quite impressive opponents like Aryna Sabalenka, Iga Swiatek, Maria Sakkari and Ashleigh Barty.

Pegula also won a couple of doubles titles in Melbourne and Doha to add to her experience. All in all, with a record of 20-11, she’s a scary player who’s well-equipped to take a fight.

Kalinina, making waves

25-year-old Anhelina Kalinina is now number 36 in the world – a career best for her. Her clay-court preparations were pretty decent as she reached the quarter-finals in Charleston and Madrid, beating the likes of Emma Raducanu, Garbine Muguruza, Sloane Stephens and Elena Rybakina.

While also playing in Rome, the Ukrainian pulled out of her second-round match against Pegula after knocking out Madison Keys in the previous round.

Kalinina also has a rich clay court pedigree; She has 15 ITF finals on the surface (four from last season) and one WTA final (first of her career) from the Budapest Grand Prix.

She has also beaten several top 10 players in her career and is known as a fighting player who doesn’t give up easily.

Pegula v Kalinina prediction and tip

This match can go either way; Pegula is the clear favorite but Kalinina is a player not to be underestimated.

A safe bet would be that this is a long affair as probably none are easy to suppress; Kalinina is also a pretty good underdog bet at 6/4.
