World No. 17 Jelena Ostapenko advanced to the third round of the round of 64 on Wednesday by beating Belgian Yanina Wickmayer in straight sets.
The 12th-seeded Latvian saved both break points she faced in the match, converting four of 13 break points to beat the qualifier 6-2, 6-2 in an hour and 12 minutes.
Ostapenko hit 45 winners against Wickmayer’s 6 but also made 28 unforced errors against the Belgian’s 5. The win was Ostapenko’s second straight win in a row. In the opening round, she defeated French Oceane Dodin 6-4, 6-4.
A semifinalist in 2018 and a quarterfinalist in 2017, Ostapenko has reached the third round of Wimbledon for the fourth time in her seventh attempt.
The 25-year-old, who won the Dubai title this year, was a finalist at Eastbourne ahead of Wimbledon. She wants to reach the fourth round for the third time.
Begu makes quick work with Cocciaretto
World No. 43 Irina-Camelia Begu needed just an hour and 20 minutes in the second round on Wednesday to finish off world No. 119 Elisabetta Cocciaretto.
The Romanian managed the only break in the first set and also got off to a great start in the second, breaking the Italian in the first game. But Cocciaretto reclaimed the break in game eight only to watch Begu restore the advantage by breaking back in the next game. The Romanian finished the game in the next game in a 6-4, 6-4 win.
Begu had also won the opening round match in straight sets, defeating Georgia’s Ekaterine Gorgodze 6-4, 6-1.
It is the 31-year-old’s first tournament since reaching the fourth round of the French Open. Begu is in the third round for the third time at Wimbledon and wants to reach the round of 16 for the first time.
Ostapenko v Begu prediction and tip
Ostapenko has a better record at Wimbledon and she’s in good contact too. Expect her to advance for a fourth-round meeting with Maria Sakkari or Tatjana Maria.
