One of college football’s most historic rivalries returns to Lincoln for the first time since 2009 when the No. 6 Oklahoma take on Nebraska at noon on Saturday. The game is the first for the Cornhuskers since coach Scott Frost was fired.

The Sooners got off to a slow start in Week 2 against Kent State, failing to score in the first 29 minutes of the game. However, they did manage 24 unanswered goals in the third quarter behind quarterback Dillon Gabriel’s 296 yards passing and three touchdowns. Receiver Marvin Mims provided a sensational win with seven catches for 163 yards and two touchdowns.

Nebraska’s losing streak in one-score contests rose to 10 with a 45–42 loss to Georgia Southern after allowing a touchdown with 36 seconds remaining. The ‘Huskers offense found some momentum, but the loss sparked an amazing 214-game home winning streak as they scored 35 or more points. Now ex-Nebraska quarterback Mickey Joseph will have the opportunity to shoot the program. Joseph came to Nebraska after five years as an offensive assistant at LSU.

Oklahoma defeated Nebraska 23-16 last year, but the Sooners’ strong attack was kept at just 5.9 yards per game. The Sooners have an all-time 46-38-3 advantage over the Cornhuskers but lost 10-3 to Nebraska in their last game at Lincoln as conference mates in 2009.

Oklahoma vs. Nebraska: Must know

Historical rivalry: Considered one of the most historic in college football, this rivalry dates back to November 23, 1912. The game was played every year until 1997, but was not a priority after the formation of the Big 12, which drew fan anger and was at least a small factor in the Huskers leaving the conference for the Big Ten. The series will also return in 2029 and 2030.

A new era: The Sooners hired an outside coach for the first time in almost 25 years when Brent Venables was selected to replace Lincoln Riley at Norman. Venables was a former coordinator for the 2000 Oklahoma championship team and stayed at Norman for 13 seasons. The Sooners are 2-0 up but struggled at times in the first half against Kent State. Nebraska marks the first significant game of the Venables era.

A second chance: It’s no coincidence that Nebraska fired Frost a week before the rivalry game, rather than letting the embattled coach go down the line with a whimper. This matchup has been circled on the calendar since it was planned. Now Nebraska will look to use this nationally televised game as an opportunity to start from scratch and build some momentum against a historic opponent.

Oklahoma vs. Nebraska prediction, tips

Featured Game | Nebraska Cornhuskers vs. Oklahoma Sooners

Oklahoma did not face a Power Five enemy under Venables. In fact, his two wins against teams ranked No. 95 and No. 108 on the CBS 131 rankings. While Nebraska struggles, the jump in talent — coupled with a new coaching direction — makes this game a little harder than early results suggest. A worse team from Nebraska played within seven points against a better team from Oklahoma last season. Don’t expect things to get out of hand when the game goes to Lincoln. Selection: Nebraska +11.5
