Nadal tames Thompson in the opener
While Nadal has probably had one of his worst starts to the clay-court season due to his fitness issues, he didn’t show too much of it in his French Open opener this season.
The Spaniard subdued Australian Jordan Thompson 6-2 6-2 6-2 in just over two hours to complete the one-sided win.
Nadal broke his opponent seven times in the match but also got broken once – it came in the second set while he was crossing anyway – and it’s something the Spaniard would hope to cope with more difficult opponents in the following games.
Apart from that, however, Nadal didn’t do too much wrong, beating 27 winners and winning 75% of the points at the net.
The world No.
The struggling Moutet shocks Stan
While Stan Wawrinka is a pale shadow of the player he once was, not too many expected Moutet to get past the Swiss in his opening game. Certainly not after losing the first set so easily.
But Moutet overcame that early defeat to stun Wawrinka 2-6 6-3 7-6(2) 6-3 in just under three hours to set up that meeting with Nadal. In doing so, Moutet also won his first main draw match at Roland-Garros since 2019, where he recorded his best performance of a third-round appearance.
Moutet, who failed to score break points in the first set and was broken twice in return, broke Wawrinka twice in the second to even the situation. The pair traded breaks in the third to push the set into a tie-break where Moutet ran away with six straight points to win it.
Wawrinka struggled to hold serve, getting broken in the fifth game and then again in the ninth to give Moutet the second round.
That seems close enough that Moutet would reach if Nadal’s foot injury doesn’t worry him.
Nadal v Moutet prediction and tip
Nadal’s 1/33 to win this, which is to be expected, and 1/3 for a straight set win. With the latter for starters, but you can also look at the games market – less than 27.5 games in this one.
