Medvedev doesn’t break a sweat in the Djere match
Medvedev’s attempt on clay hasn’t always resulted in victories from which he can take much, but the Russian has been in exuberant form in this tournament so far.
Sure, he went into each of his first two rounds as a favorite, but the way he dismantled both of his opponents was something to watch.
The world number two, who defeated Facundo Bagnis 6-2, 6-2, 6-2 in the first round, didn’t waste much more time in the second either. Medvedev was on the pitch for two and 37 hours when he knocked out Laslo Djere 6-3 6-4 6-3 to set a meeting with another Serb.
It wasn’t the best start to the match for Medvedev, falling 2-0 in the first set but breaking back twice to seal the lead. The pair then traded breaks of serve to start the second, but Medvedev managed a crucial break in game ninth before knocking it out to win two sets.
Another early break of serve against him didn’t stop Medvedev regaining the initiative before the Russian ended the encounter with a third set break in game nine.
He hopes to continue that run against Kecmanovic.
Kecmanovic takes his time to bring down Bublik
It took Kecmanovic some time to get into his rhythm but once he did, Alexander Bublik was no match for the Serb and world No. 31.
Kecmanovic, who has already established his authority on the Tour this season, had previously passed Tomas Etcheverry in straight sets in his opener. However, things weren’t so easy early on against Bublik as he dropped the first 6-4 to his opponent.
And it looked like things could get worse as Bublik sped 3-0 up in the second half before Kecmanovic finally found his rhythm.
He broke back twice, failing to serve, but then broke his opponent for a third time to level the situation. It was pretty one-sided from there, with Kecmanovic finishing the next two sets 6-2, 6-1 to complete the win.
Can he overthrow Medvedev from the throne here now?
Medvedev v Kecmanovic prediction and tip
