The number 20, Daria Kasatkina, hardly made a mistake in the first two rounds. On Tuesday, the 25-year-old started the tournament with a 6-2, 6-0 win against lucky loser Rebecca Šramková. Two days later she defeated the Mexican qualifier Fernanda Contreras Gomez 6-0, 6-3.
While Kasatkina was not broken in the 54-minute opening round match, she was broken once in the 56-minute second round.
Against Contreras Gomez on Thursday, the Rome Open semi-finalist won 76% of points on her first serve and hit 22 winners while making 15 unforced errors. Kastkina converted 5 of 6 break points in the first game and 6 of 6 in the second round.
With Šramková in 176th and Contreras Gomez in 225th, Kastkina will face her toughest test against Rogers in the third round.
Kasatkina, 2018 quarter-finalist, will make her fifth appearance in the third round at Roland Garros on Saturday.
Rogers defeats the ninth seed
Facing Kasatkina will be number 1 in the world. 50 Shelby Rogers, who reached the third round after knocking out much tougher opponents compared to Kasatkina.
The American, who edged out Tereza Martincova in the opener, beat ninth seed Danielle Collins in straight sets on Thursday.
In a tight first set, Rogers took a 4-0 lead, but Collins came back and won the next four. Rogers ended Collins’ run of back-to-back wins with the crucial third break of the set. She stuck to a one-set-up. The second set was mostly one-way, with Rogers taking a 5-1 lead. Collins got a break back, but by then it was too little too late. Rogers won 6-4, 6-3, an identical score by which she had beaten Martincova in the opening game.
The 29-year-old, who had a five-day losing streak before the tournament, is in the third round for the third time at the Paris Major. She is not hoping to finish in the last 16 for a second time after reaching the quarterfinals in 2016.
Kasatkina v Rogers prediction and tip
After beating two tough contenders in the first two rounds, Rogers will assess her chances against the 20th seed. But fresh from her exploits in Rome, Kasatkina has form on her side. Three sets in the match seem imminent if Kasatkina progresses.
