The Kansas football program expanded its Class of 2023 Saturday morning and received a commitment of Suraz Buncom. The three-star athlete announced his commitment on social media and is currently in Lawrence for his official visit to the KU. He is the second player to commit to the Jayhawks this week, joining the Texas safety Taylor Davis.
Although Buncom is judged and ranked as an athlete, KU recruits him as a wide receiver. Buncom is listed at 6-foot-4, 175 pounds. He selected the Jayhawks over 15 other offers, including six other Power 5 programs. He’s had offers from the likes of Colorado, Duke, Oregon, Kansas State and Pittsburgh to name a few.
The San Diego native is rated as a three-star prospect. The industry-leading 247Sports Composite ranks Buncom 991 nationally, 92 as an athlete, and 85 as a rising senior in the state of California. According to 247Sports staff, Buncom is the ranked 85th athlete and 106th recruit in the state of California.

KU began recruiting Buncom long before he received an offer from the staff. When KU offered him on February 1, the Jayhawks became immediate contenders. KU offensive assistant Bill Queisert expanded the offer and wide receivers coach Terence Samuel shortly afterwards took over the management of the recruiter. Buncom heard from Samuel, Queisert and several other employees in advance of his signing.
Due to NCAA recruiting rules, Buncom wasn’t able to attend KU until March, but he made his way to Lawrence at the first opportunity. He competed in KU’s Junior Day on March 5 and witnessed KU’s win over Texas at Allen Fieldhouse. This visit left a lasting impression on him.
This spring, Oregon offered and Buncom planned an official visit to the state of Oregon. But KU kept pushing and setting themselves apart from the California native. A few days ago he made his commitment to the KU staff and postponed his visit to the KU from the end of June to this weekend. He made it official on Saturday and halted his recruitment.
