What’s his deal?
The New Jersey native decided to join the Buckeyes after a summer of watching his momentum take him down a few streets. After his June 17 official visit, he was considered OSU lean, but Miami made some progress in July and looked like it was closing. But Ohio State eventually fended off the hurricanes — and Michigan State also got a visit — to win, despite Bonsu twice withdrawing his commitment date. He became the third security guard in a class that hopes to add another by signing day.
How it fits into Ohio State plans
Bonsu’s skills suggest he will fit into OSU’s three-safety defensive scheme as a bandit. He’s a larger player with the ability to handle both strong safety and Sam linebacker duties, which is exactly what this role calls for. There shouldn’t be much of a learning curve for him either, coming from a similar high school level program and playing for a fairly prominent program.
Forecasts for 2023
The Sonny Styles name should likely be inscribed in one of the starting security positions next year as a true freshman who showed up a year earlier than expected and played a small role on special teams and in certain packages this season. Most likely, it will be the bandit role. But no one has yet claimed the role as his backup, where Bonsu can spend the off-season doing it.
