India, the world No. 1 team in the ICC men’s T20I rankings, have been far from their best of late. After being eliminated in the Super 4 round at the 2022 Asian Cup, the Men in Blue lost in the 1st T20I at home to Australia and their recent results put a damper on the team’s confidence in the upcoming T20 World Cup this October year. The Indian team’s performance was disappointing as some pundits rang alarm bells at Rohit Sharma and co.
Former South African all-rounder Jacques Kallis has joined the bandwagon, weighing India’s chances of winning the T20 World Cup. Kallis, one of history’s greatest all-rounders, believes India are one of the favorites for the tournament despite their recent poor form.
“India have played very good T20 cricket and they will no doubt be one of the favourites, but there is a bit of luck at the World Cup. I think India have a team that can be favourites,” Kallis told Times India. “They’re good. At the World Cup you need luck to find your way and play big moments. Surely they have a chance to win it.”
Speaking about the Spinners’ role in the T20 World Championship, Kallis said that every team would have periods and games where Spinner or Sear would dominate. India have lined up for the World Cup with three spinners in Yuzvendra Chahal, R. Ashwin and Axar Patel, while young leg spinner Ravi Bishnoi has been added as a substitute. “I think every team will have periods and games where Spinner or Sear dominate,” said Kallis.
Kallis, who is considered one of the best all-rounders of all time, is currently playing the Legends League cricket tournament in India, representing the India Capitals. With more than 500 caps in his career, Kallis hit more than 25,000 runs as a batter and won more than 550 wickets as a medium pacer.
