AP PREVIEW:

Davis Mills threw an interception returned for a touchdown on Houston’s second offensive game and set the tone for the terrible Texans’ worst game of the season in a loss to Washington.

The Texans (1-8-1) were 20-0 down at halftime before losing to the Commanders 23-10 for the fifth straight game.

“We were never in the game,” said coach Lovie Smith. “There is total disappointment.”

Houston had five yards in offense at halftime, the lowest in franchise history. The team’s offensive line was dominated on a day that saw the Commanders sack Mills five times and limited the Texans to a season-low 21-yard rushing.

The crowd was mostly Washington fans, but the few Texans who showed up expressed their displeasure by booing the team throughout the game.

Smith was asked how he keeps the team positive during such a difficult period. He noted that Sunday’s loss was the only blowout of that span.

“You can’t group them all together,” he said. “As a coach, you always talk about a positive game, a positive game. We must continue to do so. We weren’t dominated the way we were dominated (Sunday) so that gives us hope.”

The Texans try to get over the loss and look for ways to improve. A win on Sunday against the Miami Dolphins would be the first since October 9.

“It’s pretty tough, we haven’t won a game in a minute,” receiver Nico Collins said. “Well, all you can do is move on, keep the faith. You can’t fall on yourself and start pointing fingers at everyone because then nothing will happen. It just sinks the ship.”

WHAT WORKS

After giving up two touchdowns in the first half, Houston’s defense only conceded a field goal after the break. Put in bad spots by the offense’s ineptitude, the Texans made some good plays to keep the Commanders out of the end zone after halftime.

Houston limited Washington to 3 for 13 on third downs and 1 of 4 in the red zone.

WHAT NEEDS TO WORK

There’s a lot of choice here, but Mills needs to take care of the ball and make better decisions if the Texans have any hope of improving their passing game. The Stanford sophomore had two interceptions on Sunday to give him seven in his last five games.

Despite Mills’ struggles, Smith doesn’t appear to have any intentions of benching him, so he’s getting seven more games to see if he can progress this year.

TOP UP

WR Brandin Cooks had three receptions for 70 yards in Sunday’s week after rushing for just 37 yards and losing to the Giants.

STOCK DOWN

Rookie offensive lineman Kenyon Green, the 15th overall pick in the draft, had a rough day on Sunday, getting beaten repeatedly by Washington’s Jonathan Allen. Green has appeared in every nine-start game this season but hasn’t made much progress.

“There were a lot of learning moments that we went through with him,” Smith said. “But part of taking that next step is going through some of those days where the guy playing you might be better than you right now. But you’re just learning and just hoping you’ll keep getting better.”

HURT

CB Derek Stingley, the third overall pick in this year’s draft, missed Sunday’s game with a hamstring injury. Smith wasn’t sure when he would return on Monday.

KEY NUMBERS

246-5. That’s the lead the Texans surpassed in the first half of Sunday. The net five yards undercut the eight they managed in the first half of a 40-0 loss to the Bills last season for the worst half in team history.

It was the fewest yards by a team in a half since the Raiders went 12 yards down in a 2015 win over the Broncos. Mills had minus 1 yard in the first half when he was sacked three times.

NEXT STEPS

The Texans need to get off to a much better start if they hope to match the Dolphins, who have won four straight games.

“We’re talking about building and growing,” Smith said. “We are a young team. We’re going through some growing pains. You have to fight your way through adversity.”
