Marketers need to be aware of all sorts of things as this may lead them to implement more effective marketing campaigns. Search trends on Google can help marketing campaigns get a wider reach than they otherwise would have, which is why advertisers often put a lot of effort into learning as much about them as possible.
With all of that said and now getting that out of the way, it’s important to note that SimilarWeb recently did a deep dive and identified which keywords have been trending the most so far in 2023. Interestingly, the keyword that topped the charts wasn’t even in English!
Instead, it was the Chinese word for “three bodies,” and all thanks to the upcoming adaptation of the legendary Chinese sci-fi trilogy called The Three Body Problem. This keyword was used nearly 320,000 times in January 2023, a whopping 21,000% month-over-month increase.
Second place went to US politician Kevin McCarthy, who had a really tough time getting elected Speaker of the House of Representatives. His name has been searched over 6.2 million times, up 3,459% from 492,000 times about a month ago. Much of the traffic surrounding Kevin McCarthy went to CNN, with the American news agency receiving a huge boost in traffic thanks to its coverage of political events.
Moving on, entertainment-related keywords continued to dominate the list of top search queries. Aside from The Three Body Problem, the HBO series The Last of Us also saw a huge spike in searches. Based on the popular video game, the TV series received well over 25 million searches in January.
Much of this traffic went to Wikipedia as it is a useful source of information that can tell searchers everything they need to know. The fourth entry on this list, which again has to do with the mass media, also drove a lot of traffic to the online encyclopedia.
In fourth place was the keyword “m3gan”, the name of a sci-fi TV show that is currently taking the world by storm. This just goes to show how great the influence of mass media can be when all things are considered and considered. M3gan was used as a keyword approximately 10.6 million times in January 2023 alone. That’s a 1,160% increase from search volume in December 2022.
ChatGPT’s rise should have put it in first place, but despite the fact that it does, the AI chatbot only managed to get 5th place. That could be due to a lack of widespread awareness, although this still resulted in “chat gpt login” becoming the fifth most popular keyword in January 2023.
All in all, these search trends can tell marketers a lot about how to strategize. Using these keywords and targeting them in advertising campaigns can help marketers reach the widest possible audience and potentially drive some traffic to their own websites as well.
