It’s official: Stadia is dead. After meddling in the gaming industry in recent years, Google has confirmed that it is shutting down all Stadia operations.
Stadia vice president and general manager Phil Harrison confirmed the news in a blog post this morning. Officially, all Stadia games and features will be retired on January 18, 2023. In a sincere move, Google is offering its customers full refunds on all Stadia purchases.
For many years, Google has invested in various aspects of the gambling industry. We help developers create and distribute gaming apps on Google Play and Google Play Games. Gaming developers reach viewers around the world on YouTube through videos, live streaming, and short films. And our cloud streaming technology delivers immersive gameplay at scale.
A few years ago, we also launched a consumer gaming service, Stadia. And while Stadia’s approach to streaming games for consumers is built on a strong technological foundation, it hasn’t garnered the traction we expected with users, which is why we’ve made the difficult decision to discontinue our Stadia streaming service.
We are grateful to the dedicated Stadia players who have been with us from the start. We will refund all Stadia hardware purchases made through the Google Store, as well as game and add-on content purchases made through the Stadia Store. Players will still have access to their game library and will be able to play until January 18, 2023 so they can complete the final game sessions. We expect most refunds to be completed by mid-January 2023. For more details on this process for players, visit our Help Center.
The underlying technology platform that powers Stadia is widely proven and goes beyond gaming. We see clear opportunities to apply this technology to other parts of Google like YouTube, Google Play and our Augmented Reality (AR) efforts – and make it available to our industry partners, which aligns with the future of gaming. We remain deeply committed to games and will continue to invest in new tools, technologies and platforms that drive the success of developers, industry partners, cloud customers and developers.
For the Stadia team, building and supporting Stadia from the ground up has been driven by the same passion for games that our players have. Many members of the Stadia team will continue this work in other parts of the company. We’re so grateful for the team’s groundbreaking work and look forward to continuing to impact gaming and other industries with the foundational Stadia streaming technology.
