Last year’s quarterfinalist Coco Gauff is a win away from matching her 2021 performance after moving into the last 16 with another straight set win on Friday.
It took the number 18 just an hour and 33 minutes to beat Estonia’s Kaia Kanepi 6-3, 64 in the third round. Broken in the first game of the game, Gauff struck back by breaking her opponent three times and extending a 5-1 lead. The Estonian pulled back a break, but Gauff held on to the first set.
Gauff started the second set with a break, which Kanepi brought back to make it 2-2. The world No. 23 stormed forward again with a break in seventh before earning a 6-3, 6-4 win.
The American advanced to the fourth round this week without dropping a set. In the first two rounds, she defeated Rebecca Marino 7-5, 6-0 and Alison Van Uytvanck 6-1, 7-6.
With the victory, Gauff improved to 17:10 for the season, now the 18-year-old is looking for a second major quarter-final.
Mertens rolls past Gracheva
After a dominant start, Elise Mertens received a bye in the second round, but the Belgian looked in good rhythm in the third round on Friday as she defeated Varvara Gracheva in straight sets.
Mertens, who has played at least the third round in all of her six main draw appearances at Roland Garros, will feature in the fourth round at the clay-court major for the second time. However, she never made it past the last 16.
Seeded 31st in the tournament, Mertens converted 6 of 14 break points and saved 1 of 3 to beat the Russian 6-2, 6-3.
Mertens had started her season with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Elena-Gabriela Ruse and then got a free pass into the third round after Marie Bouzková was eliminated. Will Mertens be able to reach a fourth Grand Slam quarterfinal?
