Gaston upsets the Aussie in Classic Encounter
Gaston battled cramps and a three-game deficit in the fifth set to record one of the biggest wins of his career on Tuesday, knocking out world Nos. 20 and 19th Seed Alex de Minaur from Australia.
It developed into a classic match, lasting four hours, and Gaston was quick to acknowledge the role the French crowd had played in his success, who supported him all the way and gave him the strength to carry on against the odds.
They’d helped him recover from losing a set to lead the match and ensured he lasted through a tough fourth set when his form temporarily deserted him and de Minaur claimed it without losing a single game.
When the Aussie extended that to nine straight games and Gaston suffered physically, it looked like his efforts would be in vain.
But he dug deep to recover and actually made a split, only to choke twice while serving for the match.
That meant the drama of a tiebreak in the fifth set was required to decide the match and Gaston held his nerve better which meant he could finally celebrate with the local fans.
Lucky Loser Cachin Beats Qualification
Cachin was beaten in the third qualifying round, but still earned a place in the main draw as a lucky loser.
He was lucky enough to take Slovakia’s Norbert Gombos to world number 112. to make, a man who made it through qualifying but is not known as a clay-court player.
On his Grand Slam debut, Cachin started well, two straight breaks of serve being enough to earn him the opener.
However, he was the only man to lose serve in the second and the Slovakian leveled the match.
Cachin saved two break points early in the third set but it was Gombos who dropped serve and then again and the Argentine was a set for good.
Two more breaks allowed him to seize the initiative in the fourth set. Gombos retrieved one of them, but ultimately the gap proved too great.
Gaston v Cachin prediction and tip
Gaston will be hoping for a deep run in Paris after his first-round win and although Cachin is unlikely to make it easy for him, the Frenchman should prevail with the support of the home crowd.
