Eddie Howe has revealed Gareth Southgate spoke to him about Callum Wilson, with the Newcastle striker intending to make up England’s World Cup squad.

The 30-year-old has four caps but last played under Southgate in 2019 after scoring on his debut against USA the year before.

The Three Lions boss has limited options behind Harry Kane in attack and Wilson believes he can make a boost for Qatar if he stays away from injury.

Howe agrees, saying Southgate checked on his No9’s form and fitness.

“I’ve spoken to Gareth a few times, we have a very good relationship. And yes, Callum has shown up,” said the Newcastle head coach.

“Of course there is a possibility (he can make the squad), Callum has done it before. The only thing that has kept him from being a regular in this squad are injuries. He will try to stay fit and contribute goals for us and if he does that he will certainly rise back into Gareth’s mind. The ability is there, touch wood, he can play the games.’

Howe added: “I agree (Wilson is not far behind Kane in the pecking order). For me he is one of the best strikers in England. The only question mark behind his name is how many games he plays. If he plays enough games, I really believe he will score enough goals to make the squad.”

Wilson, who scored in Newcastle’s 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest last weekend, said: “I’m behind myself, I want to go to the World Cup so it’s about getting on the ground.

“I’m sure you would come into the squad with double digits. I’m probably not in the race right now, but it’s something on my mind that I focus on and when I set goals I try to achieve them.

“We’ll see where we end up in 15 games. It’s about taking small hurdles, small tests that I face as a striker. Away from the brand. Get back-to-back goals. Get braces and hat tricks. We were favorites against newly promoted Nottingham Forest. I wanted to score and I did.

“My goal difference is good and it’s about maintaining and adding to that. It’s a goal now, but if you don’t score in 10 games it’s for nothing.’

Wilson, who missed four months last season with an Achilles injury, added: “For me, it’s about keeping that noise (fitness issues) quiet this season and dispelling that doubt. I have no doubts about my body.

“Sometimes I’m my own worst enemy. I go out 70-80 percent because I want to help the team. It doesn’t do me justice. I had good preparation for the season, I’m physically very good and I’m 100 percent fit. The more I’m on the pitch, the more goals I’ll score and the more records I’ll try to achieve.”
