Reigning Indian Wells Masters champion Taylor Fritz survived a first-round scare after being extended to five sets by Argentine qualifier Santiago Fa Rodriguez Taverna.
The world No. 201, who has never played at tour level, was quite a stellar performance coming back from twice behind but in the end the 13th-seeded American prevailed 7-6 (7-2) through. 3-6, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 win.
Both players broke each other seven times in the match, but Taverna hit more aces (9) and winners (54) than Fritz (2 aces, 39 winners). However, the American had just one double fault against the Argentine’s seven and also made 12 fewer unforced errors than Taverna’s 58. Overall, Fritz picked up 166 of the 316 points in the match that lasted three hours and 34 minutes.
The win propels Fritz into the second round at Roland Garros for the fourth time in his career. He only made it to the third round once in 2020.
Zapata Miralles says goodbye to Mmoh in three
World No. 131 Bernabe Zapata Miralles won his first main draw match at Roland Garros as the Spanish qualifier defeated American Michael Mmoh in straight sets.
Zapata Miralles won 71% of points on his first serve, converting five of 14 break points and saving five of seven to defeat Mmoh 7-6 (9-7), 6-3, 7-5 on Sunday.
In the two-hour, 52-minute contest, Zapata Miralle’s 58 winner hit against Mmoh’s 29. The Spaniard also made seven more unforced errors than the American’s 40.
This was Zapata Miralles’ fourth Tour-level peloton win of the season and third on clay. Last year, the 25-year-old lost in the opening round of his Roland Garros debut.
This year Zapata Miralles had qualified for the main draw with victories over Dudi Sela, Gastão Elias and Luca Nardi. While he won against the former two in straight sets, against the latter he had to come back after one set.

After getting stretched in the first round, Fritz will be wary of Zapata Miralles. The Spaniard may be ranked 131st but has now won four matches in a row and settled into a rhythm. Expect another close competition with Fritz moving forward.
