Taylor Fritz vs. Alastair Gray head to head
Fritz and Gray have never faced each other in a competitive game before.
Fritz wants to best emulate Wimbledon
It didn’t take Fritz too long to make it through to the second round and he will now aim to match his previous Wimbledon best when he takes on the little-known British player.
Fritz beat Lorenzo Musetti 6-4, 6-4, 6-3 in an hour and 45 minutes, hitting 16 aces and breaking his opponent four times while losing his own serve only once.
Where Fritz seemed to have drastically outclassed his opponent was on his first serves, from which he won 92% of the points. In comparison, Musetti was at a respectable but pitifully close 69%.
The result wasn’t too surprising either given that Fritz arrived at Wimbledon just last week after winning the title at Eastbourne where he tamed the likes of Alex de Minaur and Maxime Cressy to defend his title.
He will be confident of getting six wins in a row here.
Gray turns his losing streak on Grand Slam debut
After making his ATP debut in 2019, Gray played in his first-ever Grand Slam match after receiving a wildcard, defeating Chun Hsin Tseng in his opening match with a seemingly surprising result.
Gray won 6-3, 6-3, 7-6(3) in two hours and 26 minutes to advance to the second round and set up that meeting with Fritz. With seven aces and a whopping 54 winners, Gray also saved nine of the 10 break points he faced throughout the match.
The Briton, on the other hand, broke his opponent four times and in the end clinched an easy win.
He had previously lost four consecutive games in the Surbiton and Nottingham Challenger competitions and qualifiers at Queen’s and Eastbourne. This win could therefore be a confidence boost, but will it be enough to challenge his more famous American opponent? Looks doubtful.
