  • The former Indian batter said picking Ashwin for the Windies tour was a smart choice
  • Manjrekar also praised the Ashwin-Chahal combination

Former cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has picked India’s spinners for the T20 World Cup and says he is fairly confident Ravichandran Ashwin and Yuzvendra Chahal will be part of the traveling squad.

Ashwin attended the last World Cup but didn’t get to many games. He made a comeback into the T20I squad during the ongoing West Indies tour and has done quite well.

Speaking on Sports18’s Sports Over The Top show, quoted by Hindustan Times, Manjrekar said that Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav would be the main rivals for Ravichandran Ashwin to get a place in the playing XI.

“Who are his competitors now? They have Chahal confirmed for Spinner in current form. Then you have Axar Patel, you have Jadeja who could play a little bowling. Hooda threw one last game, then you have Kuldeep Yadav, you have Ravichandran Ashwin,” Manjrekar said.

Manjrekar also said Ashwin’s selection for the West Indies Tour was an excellent decision. He also said the 35-year-old had started to make an impact.

“I think Ashwin’s selection on this tour has been excellent. Over the past few years in the Indian T20 league, Ashwin has started to make an impact,” said Manjrekar.

The former Indian batter also said the combination of Ashwin and Chahal is working well for India at the moment as the latter takes the pressure off the former.

“I like Ashwin when he’s with someone like Chahal. So it’s not up to Ashwin to turn the tide. You know, the spinner’s job in T20 cricket in the middle stage is to get wickets like Shamsi and Keshav Maharaj for South Africa. Ashwin was a bit missing as a T20 spinner. He was very focused on the economy but if you’ve got someone like Chahal or if there’s any other wicket-taking-wrist-spinner then Ashwin gets a huge compliment because Ashwin has mastered the art of being frugal in T20 cricket be. In the first T20, a couple of wickets was a great sign, but with Ashwin you get exactly that, that compliment to the other main wicket spinner on the team,” Manjrekar said.
