Leylah Fernandez got off to a sizzling start in Paris with a smashing 6-0, 7-5 win over Kristina Mladenovic. The win was impressive, as was her forehand, which burned throughout the match. Despite obviously dominating the goal line, Fernandez trailed 3-5 in the 2nd set and only a choke from her opponent allowed her to make the comeback.
Still, the Canadian is showing a significant improvement over her clay court game, especially compared to last year when she bombed a couple of times against rather weak players. The Canadian will certainly be at the top of tennis for a very long time.
2022 was fine for them with a 13-7 record and a trophy, but that will certainly improve as we move to the hard courts. Clay is 3-3, which is better than the 3-5 she posted last year.
Siniakova healthy and victorious
Katerina Siniakova has had a tough few months, struggling with a number of injuries and having to withdraw from a number of games. The Czech is a great fighter who is making up some of her talent deficits. When she’s healthy, she’s a stable top 50 player with an attacking style of play.
Clay has been her best surface for a while since she knows it very well and can also attack it. She pulled off a pretty good win over Petra Martic in round one, despite trailing by a break in both sets. It shows her fighting spirit, which simply wore the Croatian down.
2022 has been pretty decent so far with an 8-8 record and 2-1 on clay. Last year she went 7-4 on the surface so expect more good tennis from her. If she is healthy she will be very difficult to beat.
Fernandez v Siniakova prediction and tip
So they’ve never played before, which isn’t ideal as Siniakova can pose some stylistic problems for Fernandez. The Canadian likes to attack, but when you have a player who can counterattack, it’s a bit difficult for her.
Siniakova is certainly capable of winning this match if she’s healthy and that seems to be the case. Fernandez can still be shaky on clay and her game is vulnerable, especially her serve. I think she’s the better player but I’m still not convinced of her clay court game.
We’ll probably see three sets, so it’s worth checking out, if you’re feeling risky, you can certainly try supporting Siniakova. There is a decent added value there. This time I will support Fernandez and see if she delivers.
