SHOWDOWN STRATEGY

Captain’s pick

AJ Brown (CP$16,800)

The Green Bay coaching staff lost Thursday night’s Week 11 soccer game. The Packers had not lost a home game to the Titans in November. Their defense has too much talent to allow 400+ yards and get thrown by Ryan Tannehill. Nonetheless, that happened because the Packers were focused on taking out Derrick Henry. If the Packers can’t stop the Titans or anyone else (they’re 4-7), how are they going to take out the Eagles?

It’s more than likely that the Packers and their abysmal run defense will once again focus on stopping the run. This will pull defenders closer to the line of scrimmage and inevitably result in less bracket coverage for AJ Brown. Not that Brown can’t beat two defenders, but he’ll likely face softer than usual coverage. Brown has been relatively quiet lately, but he’s still the No. 5 wide receiver according to Pro Football Focus. Nobody has that kind of advantage on this board. This is the Eagles’ second game without Dallas Goedert. As another week goes by, it’s another week of practicing and planning a new system without the star tight end. It would only make sense that the new scheme borrowed from Brown.

FLEX plays

Jalen Hurts ($11,600)

The Eagles lost to the Commanders, but their offense looked good in this game. If a few games had gone their way that Monday night, it could have been a crushing win for Philly. That wasn’t the case last week, but Hurts still finished with the fifth highest fantasy points at his position in the Eagles’ 17-16 win over the Colts. That was his sixth top-five finish in 10 games and eighth game in the top seven. That top-five result was largely due to his legs — 90 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown. If the airstrike doesn’t work, he can go on the run. If the airstrike works, he can still flee. The floor is high and the ceiling is sky high. Fading hurts in the Captain Spot is risky, but it can work. Fading hurts in the Captain Spot and the flex position isn’t smart.

Aaron Jones ($10,400)

The Packers have a chance Sunday night. You must run the ball successfully. The offensive line is healthy and Jones can get the job done. When the Eagles have a weakness, they stop the run (26th Rush Defense DVOA). Struggling Jonathan Taylor managed to streak for 84 yards on 22 carries in Week 11 against the Eagles. The week before, Brian Robinson and Antonio Gibson combined for 130 yards. In Week 9, Dameon Pierce rushed for 139 yards against this weak rush defense. If the game script goes as planned, Jones will go for it — 138 rushing yards against Dallas and 143 yards against Buffalo. If Green Bay fails to establish the run, let’s not think about it.

Christian Watson ($7,200)

Five touchdowns in two games is a big deal. Not only is Rodgers looking in the red zone, Watson is also making the catches. Watson, along with the rest of the Packers receivers, has been struggling with injuries this season. Now he is healthy and so is she. This isn’t an explosive or dynamic unit, but they’re no longer weaklings and quite a handful. While the defense tries to cover any above-average pass catcher, Watson was the clear beneficiary.

faded

Aaron Rodgers ($10,000)

It had to be done. Has Rodgers Ever Been a Fade Contestant on a Showdown Board? This isn’t the same Rodgers – a broken thumb since week 5 will do that. This isn’t the same offense as the Packers. Davante Adams is gone and the Packers lost their offseason offensive coordinator. Their broad receiving corps is slowly developing chemistry, but they’re not a high-end unit. Rodgers was a top-10 fantasy quarterback once this season — just once (seventh-highest points for a Week 10 QB). That’s all that needs to be said, but when more persuasion is needed, Philadelphia has the No. 3 Pass Defense (DVOA).

THE RESULT

No one thought Green Bay stood a chance against the Cowboys, and they clinched an overtime win. However, they followed that win with a lackluster performance in a home loss to Tennessee. The latter seems to be the real Green Bay this season. On the downside, the Eagles don’t seem impenetrable anymore, but a lot of that is perception. The bar was set high with their performances last season. They are expected to throttle teams by double digits each week. That hasn’t been the case lately with so many doubting the Eagles. However, after a simple but time-consuming look at each game instead of a box score, it’s clear that this team isn’t very far from the early-season version.

Final score: Philadelphia 31, Green Bay 16
