Eto’o is struck down for violent behavior in Qatar

Samuel Eto’o is back in the eye of the storm after being filmed neck-deep in an altercation with a young man identified as an Algerian Youtuber in Qatar.

Eto’o, who is president of the Football Federation of Cameroon and ambassador of the 2022 World Cup legacy, has been widely criticized on social media for his seemingly violent behavior.

In the now viral video, Eto’o was first spotted taking photos with fans.

The 41-year-old then appears to take offense at a comment made by someone he has accused.

Bystanders tried to tell the duo apart, but then a physical altercation ensued between Eto’o and the person in question

Footage appears to show Eto’o kneeling in the man’s face and knocking him to the ground.

Although it was widely acknowledged that the former African Footballer of the Year would have been furious at the young Algerian, many insist Eto’o, as a public figure and senior football official, would have handled the situation better.

Since the video was shared online, it has garnered widespread reactions, most of whom take offense at Eto’o’s behavior.

A Nigerian journalist covering the World Cup in Qatar, Suleiman Pooja, wrote: “Samuel Eto’o attacked a ‘journalist’ after he was accused of bribing the referee against Cameroon against Brazil.

“He shouldn’t have reacted that way, but instead took the opportunity to address negative narratives about match-fixing in Africa.”

Another Nigerian journalist who also covered the World Cup in Qatar, Tobi Adepoju, also shared his opinion.

He wrote: “The journalist asked Eto’o how much he bribed a referee for a game” – That’s the truth, isn’t it?

Terrible and ridiculous question.

I agree, as a leader, Eto’o could have handled it better and used this opportunity to clear the rumor if there were any, leadership skills.

An Algerian journalist, Mehar Mehazi, also added his voice to the debate; Condemnation of both the troll on Eto’o and the reaction of the FA President of Cameroon.

He wrote, “Eto’o has been trolled by Algerian fans since Cameroon beat Algeria in WCQ.”

Papa Gassama’s role in this match was considered controversial in 🇩🇿, leading fans to yell “Gassama” or “cheater” at Eto’o in public

Still an inexcusable reaction for a FECAFOOT President

Interestingly, a compatriot from Cameroon, Ngala Maimo Wajiri, media director of Africa Amputee Football (according to his profile on Twitter), was also offended by his compatriot’s handling of the situation.

He wrote: “Eto’o acted wrong no matter what the guy said. Eto’o is FA President. He had to watch his actions. It wasn’t even a self-defense move.”

Wajiri later provided updates that suggested the Algerian Youtuber was sanctioned by FIFA.

He wrote: “The Algerian YouTuber who verbally attacked Samuel Eto’o, President of Fecafoot, who is also a FIFA Ambassador for the 2022 World Cup, has just been banned by FIFA from remaining outside stadiums until the end, in where the World Cup will be played of the competition.”

Neither Eto’o nor FIFA, the organizers of the World Cup in Qatar, have officially commented on the heinous incident.
