This will be the third meeting between both players with Djokovic winning both meetings. Their first meeting was at the 2019 Davis Cup and the next at the 2020 Aussie Open, both straight-set wins for Djokovic.

Djokovic begins defending his title
Djokovic’s title win last season surprised some, but not as many as when he lost three of the first nine games he played on clay this season. Rost would have played a role as the world number one returned from a two-month hiatus following his vaccination saga at the Australian Open.
However, things are returning to normal for Djokovic.
In Rome, in his fourth tournament on clay this season – and only his fifth overall – the Serb made it clear why he is still the favorite for the title here at Roland-Garros.
Djokovic defeated five tough opponents, Aslan Karatsev, Stan Wawrinka, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Casper Ruud and Stefanos Tsitsipas, all wins were in straight sets to open his title winning account.
And he now meets a player who has never ranked higher than 48th in the world. Easy prey for Djokovic.
Nishioka faces a difficult task in the opener
In the previous three editions of the French Open, Nishioka has made it to the second round every time. This time, however, he will take on him as he takes on world number one and a tournament favorite.
And not that Nishioka would have had it easy with anyone else given his poor form.
The Japanese, world No. 96, has lost four straight matches on clay and his only two wins on clay for 2022 came in qualifiers for the Munich Open.
If he can muster the famous fighting spirit and push the world number one in each of the sentences, that’s the only realistic expectation here.
Djokovic v Nishioka prediction and tip
While Nishioka is a capable and experienced player with good results in the past, starting a Major against Novak Djokovic is no easy feat, and even less so when he’s attempting the Grand Slam with a Rome Masters win after a difficult year -Resurrect Fame 1000.
An easy opening win for the world number one.
