For the second season in a row Arsenal are embarking on a return to the Premier League but they are hoping things will go a little better than their defeat to Brentford to start last season. There is good reason to expect improvement after Mikel Arteta has added Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko what he can to bring the Manchester City environs to the Emirates Stadium.

For Patrick Vieria, he wishes nothing more than for Crystal Palace to take the next step in his progression by overthrowing Arsenal to open the season. They’ve made smart additions in the transfer market and one of the nice things about the start of the season is that all teams are on an equal footing. Even without Michael Olise and with Conor Gallagher back at Chelsea, Crystal Palace will put up quite a struggle to protect the home turf.

Crystal Palace: Thanks to tours of Australia and Singapore, Crystal Palace faced the unique challenge of having split squads in pre-season, which didn’t give Vieira the best chance of working on all players together. Some of the players didn’t meet each country’s entry requirements but they’re all together now as he’s also trying to bring new signing Chris Richards into the squad. Most of the squad will be available, but Michael Olise, Sam Johnstone, Jack Butland and James McArthur will not be available for the game.

Arsenal: Arteta is in almost perfect health. Emile Smith Rowe, Fabio Vieira, Kieran Tierney and Takehiro Tomiyasu will miss the match but with the new system Ben White will see right back to keep the attack further ahead. There’s plenty for Arsenal to support Jesus while balancing the defense when Oleksander Zinchenko marauds down the left flank.

Although last season was strong for Arsenal, Patrick Vieria knows how to draw in difficult situations. Choose: Crystal Palace 2, Arsenal 2
