COVID-19 in Australia in numbers: week ended March 24

Australia’s autumn wave of COVID-19 continues with a rising number of hospitalizations across the country.

New cases are coming in despite a modest increase since last week’s jump.

Just over 22,500 new COVID cases were reported this week, slightly up from the 22,288 recorded the week before.

However, the total number of deaths was down as 74 were reported nationwide out of 107 in the past week. It is the lowest weekly mortality report since November 11.

Hospitalizations and ICU admissions have risen, a potentially better indicator of the true nature of the current COVID wave since the relaxation of mandatory home testing and isolation rules.

The number of hospitalizations nationwide was 1,436, a similar number to reports in early February. New cases in New South Wales and Western Australia fell week by week, while other states saw increases in their totals, such as B. South Australia with an increase of 23%.

Recombinant variants appear to make up the highest proportion of circulating viral lineages.
