SALT LAKE CITY — Utah’s Clark Phillips III has received a ton of positive attention over the offseason, the latest coming from former NFL star Terrell Owens. Phillips III recently sat down with Owens and his co-host Matthew Hatchette to talk soccer for Fubo Sports’ Getcha Popcorn Ready. The full interview can be viewed here.
“I’m the meanest on the pitch”
Phillips III blew up the 2022 predictions after his stellar performance in Utah’s maiden Rose Bowl appearance last January. Against one of the most prolific offensive lines in all of college football, led by quarterback CJ Stroud, Phillips III accounted for five tackles, a pass break, a forced fumble and an interception.
The 2021 season was overall good for Phillips III after promising much in a shortened 2020 season due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Phillips III finished the year with 63 total tackles, one tackle for a loss, two forced fumbles, 13 pass breakups and two interceptions that firmly placed him as one of the best cornerbacks in the nation.
Owens, who knows a few things about great football players himself, asked Phillips III in the released social media clip if he knew anything about any of the other great cornerbacks in his class and what sets him apart from them. Phillips III’s response was simple: “I’m the meanest on the field”.
Phillips III and Owens
In a fantasy world, it would be fun to pit Phillips III and Owens against each other in an epic cornerback vs. wide receiver match. Both men possess a competitive spirit that has clearly taken them to the top of their games. It’s always interesting to think about how a new school guy would compete with one of the greats while on the way to potentially becoming a great himself.
Instead, we’ll just have to settle for interviews that show a clear respect for one another. It’s pretty incredible how much admiration Phillips III has garnered in such a short amount of time alongside Utah. It’s even crazier to think about the possibilities that 2022 may have in store for both of us.
