Controversial victory for Begu
Irina Begu passed Ekaterina Alexandrova in a very controversial match, where she ricocheted off a racket that flew into the stands and almost hit a child. The warden was called, but only received a warning when the Russian protested violently.
Eventually Begu won the match as Alexandrova couldn’t concentrate properly.
Both of Begu’s wins in Paris came after three sets in which she outlasted her opponents. In round one she took advantage of a very shaky opponent and in round two something similar happened.
She hasn’t played that well in any of those games, making a lot of mistakes and very few winners in between. She plays well on all surfaces but prefers to play on faster surfaces where her serve can do some damage. She likes to keep points short but can also play longer ones.
Overall it’s just very solid and that’s it.
Jeanjean’s Fairy Tale in Paris
Leolia Jeanjean was an excellent young player but her professional career was hampered by a knee injury that kept her away from tennis for two years. Then she decided to study in the US and never got her big break. Until now.
The 26-year-old Frenchman defeated two very good players in round three. Both Nuria Parrizas Diaz and Karolina Pliskova are good clay court players but neither stood a chance against Jeanjean. It feels like typing it out, but it really was.
Jeanjean blew up both spots on the pitch with her shot that hit 28 against Parrizas Diaz and 17 against Pliskova. Both have helped her by making far too many mistakes, but she won’t care. She has also emerged as a fan favorite as crowds filled the stands and loudly supported her in every game.
All of this will help her a lot against a player who has made twice as many mistakes as winners in this event so far.
Begu v Jeanjean prediction and tip
So this is a very interesting matchup. Begu is of course the better player, but Jeanjean is living a fairy tale right now. She plays well in her home country with the tribune hailing her name. This can be a powerful driving force for any player.
So far, she’s hit the ball so cleanly that she blew both opponents away. She could certainly do the same to Begu. The Romanian had a negative winner-error rate in both games and that’s a recipe for disaster against a player in form. There is very little value in supporting Begu, so take Jeanjean.
