Aztecs finish 11th at the NIT in Arizona

TUCSON, Arizona. — The San Diego State men’s golf team finished 11th in Saturday’s Arizona National Invitational Tournament in Tucson, Arizona. The Aztecs hit a 1-over-par 289 on Saturday’s final round and finished jointly 4-under 860 on the par-72, 7,200-yard Omni Tucson National Course.

Tournament host Arizona, ranked 18th in the latest GolfStat computer rankings, won the teams title with 24 under 840 points, edging out No. 9 Pepperdine (-23), No. 3 Arizona State (-22), No. 4 Illinois (-21) and No. 22 Oklahoma State (-21). USC (-17) finished sixth, while No. 12 Florida (-14), No. 21 Colorado State (-8), No. 13 Oklahoma (-6) and New Mexico (-6) also ahead of SDSU (-4) in a field where nine of the 13 teams were ranked in the top 27 of the GolfStat score.

second grader Shea lague (Jamul, Calif./Steele Canyon HS) was San Diego State’s top finisher in a three-way tie for 13th of 84 golfers at 5-under 211. Lague fired his second 2- under 70 in a row, opening with two birdies on the first three holes and four through his first 10 (along with two bogeys) before recording pars on the last 10 holes.

second grader Justin Hastings (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands) dropped to 44th after a 2-over-74, ending on an even par of 216. Hastings was a 3-under through 10 holes, but had three straight holes on the back nine ( #14, #15, and #16) and bogeyed the par-4, 469-yard 18th to settle for a disappointing 74.

student in the first year Dylan Oyama (Carlsbad, Calif./Pacific Ridge HS), meanwhile, finished 50th with a 1:217 after a 1:73 on Saturday. Oyama double-bogeyed on the par-4, 402-yard first hole with five birdies (and two bogeys) through his first 14 holes, but bogeyed his last two holes for a 73.

Senior Youssef Guezzale (San Diego/La Jolla HS) was 59th today at +4 with 4 to 76, a freshman Tyler Kowak (Del Mar, Calif./La Jolla HS) improved from his 76-74 yesterday with an even par of 72 today to 69th at +6.

USC’s Jackson Rivera and Arizona’s Zach Pollo shared the same medal win with 13-in-203, three shots ahead of Pepperdine’s William Mouw (-10).

San Diego State is looking to win its third straight Wyoming Cowboy Classic title April 3-4 at the Whirlwind Golf Course in Chandler, Arizona.
