CLEVELAND, Ohio — Cuyahoga County and most of the greater Cleveland metropolitan area remained yellow or were designated as moderate-level COVID-19 transmission on the latest map from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
For the third straight week, Ashtabula and Lorain counties were the only counties in Northeast Ohio to be red-rated for high COVID-19 transmission. The CDC map was updated late Thursday.
Other nearby counties marked as red were Erie, Huron, Sandusky, and Ottawa.
People in red counties with high transmission are recommended by the CDC to wear masks indoors. Counties are considered to have high levels of transmission when a community’s coronavirus circulation could overwhelm local hospitals.
People living in counties marked yellow who are at risk for severe COVID-19 should consult their doctor about wearing masks or taking other precautions, according to the CDC.
Across Ohio, the number of counties marked green for low COVID-19 transmission rose to 24 this week from 12 last week. A total of 25 counties were classified as red and 39 as yellow.
Counties are classified as low (green), moderate (yellow), or high (red) under the CDC’s system for estimating the risk of COVID-19 infection.
The new color-coded CDC designations were introduced on February 25. By early March, all Ohio counties were green or yellow; none were red.
