After a visit to the head coach David Rubio Announcing his retirement on Tuesday, Arizona quickly moved and announced the hiring Charita Stubbs as the next female volleyball head coach, becoming the first African-American female head coach in program history.
Stubbs will become the fourth head coach in program history, replacing Rubio, who finished with a record 570-380 during his tenure as Arizona head coach.
“I want to say thank you David Hecke for believing in me and naming me Arizona Volleyball’s new head coach,” Stubbs said. “I look forward to running my alma mater while bleeding red and blue. I can’t thank Dave Rubio enough for believing in this girl from Cleveland, Ohio as a player and as a coach. I stand for truth, hard work and discipline in this game, and I will carry on the Arizona volleyball culture where our student-athletes enjoy the process.”
Stubbs has been with the program as an assistant coach for 19 seasons but has been with the team for the past 10 seasons.
Before Stubb’s second stint in Tucson, she was the head coach at North Carolina State, where she won 22-111 with the Wolfpack during her four seasons.

She is a nationally respected figure in collegiate volleyball who excels at developing elite volleyball athletes with a passion for recruiting and developing these student-athletes into academic, athletic and lifelong champions who align with our mission and match our values. Rita has tremendous vision and outstanding skills that will set the stage for Arizona Volleyball’s future success, and I look forward to seeing her continue to add chapters to the program’s storied legacy.
Arizona will hold a press conference Thursday to introduce Stubbs as its next volleyball head coach.
