The 2023 FIBA World Championship and 2022 Continental Championships were among the main topics discussed at the last FIBA Executive Committee meeting.
According to the press release: “The FIBA Executive Committee convened today via video conference for its second meeting of 2022. A very busy calendar of events is coming up over the next few months, including the fourth window of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 qualifiers, the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2022, the FIBA EuroBasket 2022 and the FIBA AmeriCup 2022 that had the meeting an eventful agenda.

FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2022
With the flagship FIBA Women’s event less than a month away, a progress report has been received on the final preparations for the upcoming 2022 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup. Various programs and initiatives are underway to ensure that the 2022 Women’s World Cup will have the greatest impact yet.
FIBA U17 Basketball World Championships 2022
The Executive Committee received reports on the recent FIBA U17 Basketball World Cup 2022 in Spain and the FIBA U17 Women’s Basketball World Cup 2022 in Hungary, which took place in July. Both World Championships have been held successfully, with hosts being part of FIBA’s multi-year hosting model. FIBA, meanwhile, has started the application process using the same model for World Youth Events for 2024-26.
FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 and Qualifications
Preparations for the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup continue in the three host countries. Reports of this progress came in along with the successful third qualifying window played in June. With the return to the home-away format for America and very high attendances worldwide, 60 teams have now qualified for the second round of qualifiers, which takes place from August 24th to 30th.
The FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 celebrated several milestones along with the announcement of JIP, the new World Cup mascot. This week also sees the One Year to Go celebrations in Japan, the Philippines and Indonesia.
FIBA Continental Cups 2022
The Executive Committee heard reports on the recently held FIBA Asia Cup 2022 in Indonesia in July and the upcoming FIBA EuroBasket 2022 and FIBA AmeriCup 2022, both of which will be held in September.
Updates on upcoming seasons of the Basketball Champions League (BCL), Basketball Champions League Americas (BCLA) and Basketball Africa League (BAL) were also presented to the Executive Committee. The BCL regular season begins on October 3rd, with qualifying tournaments taking place from September 21st to 25th. The fourth season of the BCLA begins in December and the third season of the BAL takes place next year.
Progress reports were given on the current 3×3 national team competitions and the professional circuit which will result in a staggering number of more than 120 FIBA 3×3 events this year. The next event starting today is the FIBA 3×3 U18 World Cup taking place in Debrecen, Hungary from August 23-28.”
