Veronika Kudermetova against Qinwen Zheng head to head
Kudermetova and Zheng have never played each other in a competitive match before.
Kudermetova fights past Haddad Maia
Much was expected of Kudermetova’s quarter-final match against the in-form Beatriz Haddad Maia and after two sets the match did not miss.
It was only in the third set that Kudermetova stole a match from Haddad Maia and scored 6:7 (4). 7:6 (6), 6:1 win and secured her sixth WTA semi-final spot this season.
After a 6-0, 6-1 win over Fernanda Gomez in the second round, Kudermetova was an early break first and then fell 4-2 in the opener. She then saved a few set points at 4-5 only to lose the set in the ensuing tie-breaker.
In the second, Kudermetova lost the early break advantage, then missed a set point on his opponent’s serve and three more in the tie-breaker before leveling.
An exhausted Haddad Maia found no response to Kudermetova’s return in the final set but, more importantly, won just four points on the Russian’s serve to capitulate and give her opponent the match.
Kudermetova will know she has overtaken the tournament’s best player but can hardly be satisfied against a rising star.

Zheng prevails against Liu
Zheng, who started out as the overwhelming favorite in her quarterfinal match against Claire Liu, was put to the test a bit but still managed to prevail in straight sets.
Zheng needed a touch over two hours of play to deliver a 6-4, 7-5 win over Liu, making it their third straight win in the tournament. She had previously sent out Paula Badosa, losing just five games in the process.
Zheng, who started the season with a semi-final appearance at Melbourne Summer Set 1, has now won three games four times in a row this season.
At the beginning of the year she was 126th in the world rankings, but she is now nicely 36th and regardless of the result, it can be assumed that she will start the new week in 31st place. A win here will help her move into the top 30, but against her is an opponent who won’t be a pushover.
Kudermetova v Zheng prediction and tip
This could turn into a fighting encounter that sees a third set. Kudermetova only just keeps the edge.
